Ratios for Mixing Volcanic Ash with Cocopeat in Grow Bags
The mixes been designed by our expert agronomists bearing in mind crop needs, climate conditions and the technology required to get production going, among others.
Suggested Ratios
- Soilless Mixes
- Alternative Mixes
For crops that require higher water retention, a lower proportion of
volcanic ash is advisable. In such cases, a mix of 70% cocopeat and 30% volcanic ash is
recommended. This mirrors the standard 70:30 cocopeat-to-coco chip ratio used in
commercial grow bags, which optimizes water retention and aeration.
- Nutrient-Rich Mixes
If volcanic ash is used primarily as a mineral additive rather than a
structural component, 5–10% volcanic ash by volume blended into cocopeat (with or
without other additives like compost) can provide a nutrient boost without significantly
altering the physical properties of the substrate.
Suggested Mixes for Grow Bags
Cocopeat | Volcanic Ash | Notes/Use Case |
---|---|---|
70% | 30% | Best for water retention, general use |
50% | 50% | Enhanced minerals, drainage |
90% | 10% | For mineral supplementation only |
Customer Specific Mixes
Pacificcoir can offer specific blends tailored to our customers needs, allowing you to specify the ratio of cocopeat to volcanic ash or other additives. This allows you our customer to pre order as per your specific requirements providing savings on site.
Summary

70:30 (cocopeat: volcanic ash)
Is ideal for most vegetables and fruits, balancing moisture retention and aeration.

50:50
Can be used for crops that benefit from extra minerals and drainage.

10% volcanic ash
Is sufficient if used primarily as a mineral additive.
